HCC men’s, women’s track teams both place 3rd at Region 6 meet
David Thid, Chris Johnson, Brooke Hawkins bring home first-place medals
The Hutchinson Community College men’s and women’s track teams both placed third at the Region 6 Track and Field Championships, which took place Thursday, Friday and Saturday at Pratt Community College.
The HCC men’s team posted its best finish since 2015 with a third-place finish in the Region 6 men’s standings with 107.5 points.
Cloud County edged out Barton Community College 131-127 for the men’s team title. Coffeyville edged out Fort Scott 96-95 for fourth place.
The Hutchinson CC women’s team clipped Fort Scott 88.5 to 88 for third place in the Region 6 meet.
Barton CC won the Region 6 women’s championship 168-160 over Cloud County. Cowley College placed fifth with 61.5.
Hutchinson’s David Thid captured the Region 6 men’s 400-meter hurdles championship Saturday with a time of 51.39 seconds, earning 10 points for the Blue Dragon men’s track team at the
Thid easily outdistanced Fort Scott Community College runners Charmar Smith and Mario Paul, who placed second and third with times of 52.42 and 53.17.
Teammate Chris Johnson captured the Region 6 pole vault championship, clearing 15 feet, 7 3/4 inches. HCC’s Jayse Spencer tied for seventh place, clearing 13-4 1/4. Johnson and Spencer earned 12.5 team points for the Blue Dragons.
Hutchinson’s Brooke Hawkins won the Region 6 women’s triple jump with a mark of 39 feet, 5 inches on Saturday at Pratt Community College — good for 10 points.
HCC’s Ty’Rique Roland placed second in the Region 6 men’s high jump event, clearing 6 feet, 7 1/2 inches, picking up 8 points.
Hutchinson’s Christian Darrah placed second in the Region 6 men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9 minutes, 40.66 seconds — good for another 8 points.
Hutchinson’s Jack Losew was the Region 6 runner-up in the men’s javelin Friday with a throw of 186 feet.
Hutchinson’s Leo LeGrand placed third in the men’s 1,500-meter race with a time of 3:58.24, picking up 6 points.
Hutchinson’s Ezekiel Seamster placed fifth in the Region 6 men’s 100-meter dash finals with a time of 10.284 seconds. Seamster now has the fifth-best 100 time in Blue Dragon history.
Seamster just missed the fourth-place time of 10.281 set by Pratt Community College’s Joseph Michel.
The top three finishers in the 100-meter dash were Butler CC’s Joesph Farinha, Fort Scott’s Josiyah Taylor and Butler CC’s Andre Morrison, who were clocked at 10.23, 10.251 and 10.254.
HCC’s D’Antonio Warren placed seventh in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.58 seconds.
Seamster placed sixth in Friday’s preliminaries with a time of 10.33 seconds and Warren placed eighth in 10:39.
Seamster and Warren placed third and seventh in the men’s 200-meter dash finals and picked up another 8 points.
Seamster just edged out Barton CC’s Wanyae Belle 20.782 seconds to 20.783 for third place (20.79). Seamster posted the second-fastest 200-meter time in Blue Dragon history.
Warren was edged out by sixth-place finisher Andre Morrison of Butler CC 21.258 seconds to 21.259 (21.26).
Hutchinson’s Titus Kiprotich, Farrin Mangelson and David Ultreras placed second, third and ninth in the men’s 5,000-meter race Saturday with times of 14 minutes, 52.71 seconds, 15:20.57 and 16:24.12.
Mangelson placed third in the men’s 10,000-meter race on Friday with a time of 31 minutes, 49.43 seconds and qualified for the NJCAA Championships. Ultreras placed 12th with a time of 34:24.
Hutchinson’s Christopher Brown placed fourth in the men’s discus Friday with a throw of 168 feet, 6 inches.
On Saturday, Brown placed sixth in the men’s shot put with a mark of 49 feet, 1 inch. Grady Bare placed eighth with a mark of 44-4 1/4.
Brown also placed sixth in the men’s hammer throw on Saturday with a mark of 164 feet, 5 inches.
The HCC men’s 4x100-meter relay team of Warren, Omari Smith, Trenton Bronaugh and Seamster placed fifth with a time of 41.04 seconds.
The Hutchinson 4x400-meter relay team of Elisha Williams, Rickyle Telemaque, Warren and Thid placed sixth with a time of 3:15.83.
The Blue Dragon men’s 4x800-meter relay team of Titus Kiprotich, Christian Darrah, Evan Avitia and LeGrand placed sixth with a time of 8:04.11 on Friday.
Hutchinson’s Khalon Neymour placed 18th in the men’s 400-meter dash with time of 51.14.
HCC’s Evan Avitia placed 19th in the men’s 800-meter race with a time of 2:03.2.
Butler CC placed sixth in the men’s team scores with 71.5, followed by Colby 54, Cowley College 50, Garden City 29.5, Dodge City 22.5, Pratt 22, Neosho 16, Northwest Kansas Technical College 16, Highland 15 and Allen County 5.
HCC women have strong Region 6 showing
In addition to her Region 6 women’s triple jump title, Hawkins placed third in the women’s high jump with a clearance of 5 feet, 4 1/4 inches.
Liberty Limon placed seventh with a clearance of 5-0 1/4. Hawkins and Limon scored 8 points.
HCC’s Kaylee James finished as the Region 6 runner-up in the women’s 100-meter hurdles on Day 2 of the meet Saturday with a career-low time of 13.88 seconds for 8 more points.
James improved her No. 2 all-time Blue Dragon performance in the event.
James qualified for the 100-meter hurdles finals with a third-place preliminary time of 14.15 seconds on Friday.
James added a fourth-place finish in the women’s 400-meter dash with a time of 56.91 seconds. Teammate Kemisha Williams-Dominique placed 12th with a time of 58.96 seconds. HCC’s Ashlyn Finley was 22nd in 1:04.91.
Hutchinson’s Serenity Larson and Laura Avila placed third and fifth in the Region 6 women’s 5,000-meter race, earning the team another 10 points. Larson was clocked at 18 minutes, 52.83 seconds and Avila was timed at 19:29.5.
Avila posted the fifth-fastest women’s 5,000-meter time in Blue Dragon history.
On Friday, Larson broke the school record in the 10,000 meters and Jordyn Picolet ran the third-fastest 10,000-meter time in team history to lead the Blue Dragon women on Day 1 at the Region 6 Outdoor Championships.
Larson placed second in the 10,000-meter race with a time of 39 minutes, 42.13 seconds. Picolet was clocked at 40 minutes, 40.38 seconds.
On Friday, Hutchinson freshman Jenna Kuepker placed second in the women’s javelin with a throw of 145 feet, 3 inches.
The Blue Dragons placed fifth in the women’s 4x800-meter relay on Friday with a time of 9 minutes, 50.82 seconds.
The HCC women’s 4x100-meter relay team of Nhubia Coney, Williams-Dominique, Yaya Moreno and James placed sixth with a time of 49.58 seconds.
HCC’s Alivia Noll and Nakaela O’Hair placed fourth and sixth in the women’s pole vault competition. Both cleared 10 feet, 2 3/4 inches and picked up 7.5 points for HCC.
Hutchinson’s Taylor Hoskinson, Ellie Van Zelfden and Abigail Grantham placed fifth, sixth and 11th in the women’s 1,500-meter race with times of 4:50.37, 4:59.63 and 5:08.59. Hoskinson and Van Zelfden picked up 7 points for the Blue Dragons.
Hoskinson placed eighth in the women’s 800-meter race with a time of 2 minutes, 28.08 seconds. Grantham and Daisy Orozco placed 17th and 19th in 2:33.34 and 2:34.12.
The Hutchinson women’s 4x400-meter relay team of Coney, Moreno, Williams-Dominique and James placed ninth with a time of 4:05.01.
HCC’s Hayleigh Burke, Aiyanna Green and Emilie Schweizer placed ninth, 12th and 15th in the women’s hammer throw with efforts of 139-10, 131-4 and 126-0.
Garden City finished sixth in the women’s team scoring with 57 points, followed by Colby 55, Butler 54, Dodge City 43, Coffeyville 35, Highland 19, Pratt 13 and Neosho 10.
